Dental health activities are designed to encourage good dental health practices and to help avoid dental cavities, gum diseases and oral cancer. State dental health programs are the primary entities responsible for conducting the core activities with regard to oral health conditions within different states. Local health departments in association with the dental community and public/private schools also arrange various dental health activities. The promotion of dental sealants and monitoring of the fluoride content in drinking water are examples of disease prevention activities. The American Dental Association provides a great deal of resources for dental health activities.

Classroom dental health activities are an integral component in the development of a child. Dental health activities to provide valuable oral care education and to promote the importance of proper dental hygiene among children are conducted with the help of posters, interactive dental health games and contests, health fairs and classroom presentations. Health educators present programs on topics such as brushing and flossing, bad breath, good nutrition and how to overcome the fear of visiting the dentist. The organization and administration of school-based fluoride mouth rinse programs and the promotion of school dental screening are examples of additional dental health activities focused on children.

Organizations such as Oral Health America develop, implement, and facilitate educational and service programs designed to raise awareness of the importance of oral health. Nationwide activities and campaigns coordinate schools, governments, care providers, and corporate and community partners in the fight against tooth decay and oral disease prevention. Many state dental health programs are involved in epidemiologic surveys, applied research projects and community needs assessments. This information is important in developing an appropriate and responsive community programming. Many public health systems operate independent public health dental activities. These activities vary in scope and size across each state depending on population requirements. State grants are allotted to develop innovative dental activities and programs specific to individual states? needs, and improve access to oral health services.

Dental care if not equally, but very close to health care in terms of its importance. Still we are so behind in dental care than health care. Let us review the reasons behind this.

US is much ahead of many countries in the world, in dental care research and availability of facilities. We have the best trained doctors, hospitals and universities. So much manpower and taxpayers money are invested in research. Awareness of dental care also is very high in US than many other countries in the world.

Oral hygiene is so much part of our culture. We have the best dental products available in the market. We have very healthy competition in the dental care products and is available in any nook and corner of the country.

Still we have a lot of dental problems compared to other countries. What is the reason behind this. It is because the cost of dental care is extremely high in the country. Common man cannot afford dental care in US. Most of the health insurances do not cover dental. Even if, you have dental insurance, they have caps on the money that can be spend of dental care. This makes it so hard even for middle income families to support dental care needs of their family. It becomes harder for retired people. Food habits of this country also adds to the need of dental care. Especially the meat eating.

Many socially committed companies came out with solutions. One among those, is dental discount plans. For a small monthly fee, anybody can afford to maintain a discount plan and get this available for the whole family irrespective of their age or the number of members in a family. It is a beautiful concept and may be solution for dental care issues of this country.

Discount dental plans, designed to provide significant savings on your dental care needs, have quickly become an attractive alternative to dental insurance. Individual and family discount dental plans provide an alternative to the frustrating limitations and inflated costs commonly associated with most dental insurance plans.

Traditional dental insurance, once the only dental benefit option available, features many drawbacks including costly deductibles, tedious claim forms, long waiting periods and other limitations. On the other hand, discount dental plans are affordable, easy-to-use and free of these hassles.

What are some of the major differences between dental insurance and discount dental plans?
Some of the characteristics of Dental Insurance include:

· Limitations, deductibles and annual maximums

· Waiting periods for major dental procedures

· Tedious and time-consuming written claims process

· Limitations/exclusions on pre-existing conditions

· Certain dental specialties, such as cosmetic dentistry, are rarely covered

· Expensive monthly payments for defined coverage

· Typically inaccessible to individuals and families unless provided by their employer

Some of the characteristics of Discount Dental Plans include:

· No annual limits, enjoy discounts on most dental services all year long

· Most plans activate within 1 – 3 business days

· No tiresome paperwork hassles, plan membership card is presented for discounts on most dental services

· No health restrictions

· Select plans include discounts on dental specialties, including cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics

· Affordable membership fees grant access to a network of providers offering discounts on most dental procedures

· Available directly to individuals, families, businesses and other groups

Discount dental plans are an affordable and easy-to-use alternative to dental insurance, and offer significant savings on most dental procedures.

You may be slacking on going to see the dentist for one reason or another. I, myself tremble at the very thought of being strapped to a chair while getting my mouth poked at with a metal instrument. Unfortunately, I have experienced a few traumatizing episodes at the dentists’ office. Some of the visits involve me getting handed some tranquilizers to calm down. Another one entails me watching a video on periodontal disease and getting a billed the equivalent of a week’s pay.

Recent studies have shown a direct link between physical and oral health. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease can trigger inflammation throughout the body and increase the risk of life threatening conditions. It’s an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth. It often gets ignored if there’s no pain involved and if left untreated conditions will worsen. Poor oral health has a massive negative impact on the rest of the body. Tobacco use also increases the risk of this disease.

Gum disease can lead to a heart attack because the inflammation in the mouth affects the blood stream and restricts the blood flow in the arteries. It contributes to clogged carotid arteries which are blood vessels that carry blood to the brain leading to a stroke. Studies show that people who have the worst blockage in arteries had the most severe gum problems. Tooth loss at an early age due to gum disease has also been said to quadruple the risk of Alzheimer’s later on in life. These are just some of the conditions this disease has been associated with.

To find out if you definitely have gum disease, you should go see a dentist for a full exam and check up. After taking x-rays they should check the firmness and color of the gums. By using a small probe they can measure the depth between the tooth and the gum line to determine if you have periodontal disease. The normal space is 3 millimeters or less, any more will be an indicator of how serious the disease is. Bleeding gums is normal if you don’t floss regularly or improperly. Even by flossing and brushing properly, plaque can stay on the teeth so go to the dentist regularly even if you’re a scaredy cat like me.

My brother got married last year, and just the other day, we were browsing through his wedding photos. The great thing about wedding photos is that they make you happy, because almost every person in the album is grinning back at you with huge toothy smiles!

Except for one person. In every photo, my cousin Samantha always keeps her mouth closed. The result is almost laughable attempt to smile with pursed lips, which looks more like a grimace, or even a frown, than anything resembling a smile.

I remember the photographer shouting at everyone, “Say cheese!”, “Big smiles!”, “Show us your pearly whites!” But in every photo, Samantha is not smiling.

Why doesn’t she smile?

Well, you see, she smokes. And she drinks coffee. And soda.

As a result, her teeth are not exactly what you would call white. Perhaps a sort of off-white, or cream-color. Or possibly even yellow. That’s why she doesn’t show her teeth in photos.

Of course, she won’t admit that it’s because of the tobacco, or the coffee, or the soda. She says “It’s hereditary, my parents had yellow teeth!” Yes, Samantha, but they also smoked and drank coffee. And besides, times have changed.

In the past few years, amazing technological leaps have been made in the area of cosmetic dentistry. In fact cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry is fast becoming one of the biggest areas within the dental field. As treatments improve and become more affordable, more and more people are coming to cosmetic dentists for beautiful teeth.

Not only can cosmetic dentist whiten teeth, but they can also create dental implants to fill in gaps from missing teeth, and crowns to even out teeth levels. Cosmetic and implants dentists can skillfully blend science and art, and “sculpt” a more attractive, pleasing smile for you!

So, Samantha, a few tips. Firstly, stop smoking, stop drinking coffee and soda. Secondly, arrange an appointment to see your local cosmetic dentist. The procedure takes less than thirty minutes. And finally, start using teeth-whitening toothpaste twice a day. Follow these simple steps and you’ll have whiter teeth in no time at all.

Then, at the next family event, you’ll be able to smile when the photographer shouts, “Show us your pearly whites!”

To understand gum disease prevention, it is important to understand what gum disease is. First of all, it doesn’t just hurt people who are your grandparent’s age. Teenagers and young adults can get gum disease too because there are so many contributing factors. Sometimes the problems can be as severe as bleeding, pain, and tooth loss. Then again, some of the symptoms may only go as far as bad breath. That can be quite embarrassing.

The proper name for gum disease is Periodontal disease, which is an infection that affects the bones that support the teeth and of the gums. When untreated, the condition can become quite severe. Bleeding is usually the first sign, which is something to not be ignored. It is natural to bleed after hard brushing or flossing, but anytime the gums bleed for abnormal reasons, it is time to get some help. If ignored, the teeth can actually become loose and fall out. You don’t want this to happen because teeth aren’t just to make you look good, but teeth are important in your overall existence.

What causes gum disease?

You have to know the causes to know how gum disease prevention works. First of all, it is caused by plaque buildup. It is that sticky stuff that forms on your teeth and gums and it is filled with germs. The bacteria contained within plaque produces toxins that irritate the gums. That irritation later leads to damage. You know the damage has started when you start seeing your gums become red and irritated. They may swell and eventually bleed. Gum disease can affect the area around one tooth or all of your teeth. But know that one tooth being affected is going to eventually lead to more teeth being affected. That’s why you need to do something about it as soon as you see it starting. What you are doing is stopping the progression of it and exercising gum disease prevention for the rest of your mouth.

How to treat and prevent gum disease

First of all, pay close attention to your gums. Gum disease can be quite sneaky because it starts attacking your gums before you even notice the symptoms. You can actually have gum disease and not know it, which is why you should exercise gum disease prevention. It is never too late to start.

As for how to treat and prevent gum disease, the steps are more or less the same:

• Brush at least twice each day
• Floss regularly
• Use a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash

Common emergency dental problems include broken teeth, abnormal swelling, and serious toothache.

Broken or Fractured Tooth:

If you have a broken tooth or tooth fracture, you should contact an emergency dentist as soon as possible. If the tooth is knocked out, place it in a glass of milk immediately, and there is a good chance the dentist will be able to re-implant it. Milk provides a moist and nourishing environment for the tooth until it is re-implanted. Try not to touch the root portion of the tooth.

The tooth has the greatest chance of survival if it is re-implanted within thirty minutes.

Swelling:

Tooth swelling or abscess is usually a result of tooth decay. Trauma to the tooth may also be the cause, such as when a tooth is chipped or broken. This is due to openings in the tooth enamel, which allow bacteria to reach the pulp (the center of the tooth), leading to infection. If left untreated, infection can spread out to the bones surrounding the infected tooth.

If you have swelling or an abscess accompanied by a fever, contact your dentist as soon as possible. While waiting until Monday may seem considerate, it usually makes it harder to treat the problem.

Toothache:

A serious toothache can be caused by many different things. Sometimes the nerve is dying, and you will need to have a root canal. Other times, you may have a gum abscess, and an antibiotic will quickly solve the problem.

Whatever the cause, your dentist will need to see you and take a mouth x-ray to determine what the cause is. Call your dentist when you have a toothache and let him take you out of pain - before it gets worse!

Dr Haddon Suttner (DMD) has his own dental practice in Bondi Beach, Sydney. He is always on-call for emergency dental procedures.

Nowadays, more people are keeping their teeth throughout their lives. Although some diseases and conditions can make dental disease and tooth loss more likely, most of us have a good deal of control over whether we keep our teeth into old age.

The most important thing you can do to maintain good oral health is to brush and floss your teeth on regular basis.

Most mouth dilemmas are caused by plaque, that sticky layer of microorganisms, food particles and other organic matter that forms on your teeth. Bacteria in plaque produce acids that cause cavities. Plaque also leads to gum disease.

The best defense is to remove plaque daily before it has a chance to build up and cause problems. Brushing removes plaque from the large surfaces of the teeth and, if done correctly, from just under the gums. Flossing removes plaque between teeth.

What do you take care of your teeth?
